On Saturday, Sept. 13, more than 30 community gardens throughout the Twin Cities will celebrate Community Garden Day, an event recognizing the contributions of community gardeners to their cities and communities.

The cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis both recently passed resolutions recognizing the contribution of local gardeners and gardens to their communities.

“The abundance of community gardens is one of the reasons that Minneapolis is such a great place to live,” Ward 12 Minneapolis Councilmember Andrew Johnson said in a statement. “It’s important we recognize their role in bringing people together and building healthy, sustainable communities.”

Visitors are invited to take a self-guided tour through the 30 participating garden and participate activities, which vary and run throughout the day. These activities include a bike tour linking the participating community gardens on the north side of Minneapolis, art projects, local music, potlucks, workshops, speakers and more. All events are free and most are open house, but some events are requesting pre-registration in order to attend. A complete listing of events is available on the event website.

The event is organized by Gardening Matters, a nonprofit based in the Twin Cities that works to grow and maintain community gardens by supporting the community gardeners.
