Brenda Pflaum and Maryann Watters of Maple Grove will perform with the Twin Cities Women’s Choir (TCWC) on May 9 and 10.

TCWC has an annual Gala called “Divas and Desserts,” where they will perform two pieces that were created specifically for them.

This “diverse women’s choir that sings, performs and affirms the voices of women” will perform the song Bdote (“where two waters come together”) written by Janika Vandervelde, and Funkytown Remix, composed by Randi Grundahl Rexroth. Both composers are Minnesotans, which goes with this year’s theme.

Each year the gala has a different theme and this year it is “Minnesota! Nice!” All the songs performed will be musical stories about living in Minnesota and the things that make the state special.

The women will be singing songs about the Vikings, going to the State Fair, and a song about hot dish, which Brenda and Maryann described as being “hilarious.” They’re also singing “Somewhere over the Rainbow,” because Judy Garland, a Minnesota Native, originally sang it.

The group started off which just 16 women and 25 women performed in their first concert. Now, about 130 women are performing at “Divas and Desserts.” All of the women are gifted singers, but Watters and Pflaum say that’s not what drew them to TCWC. “The choir and singing is a common spread,” Pflaum said, and Watters added the friendships made were invaluable to her, and “of course, the singing is good too.”

“The spring concert is usually one of our funnest, lightest, sense of music that we do in the year” Watters said, “we hope for a good time and good dessert.”

TCWC will perform at 7:30 pm at St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church. There will be a silent and live auction, music, and dessert. It is located at 3450 Irving Ave. South in Minneapolis. Pre-sale tickets are $25 for adults and $22 for students and seniors. Tickets will also be sold at the door for $30.

Tickets can be ordered at www.twincitieswomenschoir.org or 612-333-8292.
